Chapter Twelve
Ben put down the phone and rose to his feet. On his way to the elevator, he was surprised to see Reece jog along the corridor and then duck into the control room. Wondering if something was amiss, he stopped outside the door and heard a commotion coming from inside. With a puzzled frown, he stepped quietly into the room.
Reece and three of the security guards were huddled together over one of the many security monitors. Oblivious to his arrival, they continued ogling the image on the screen and sniggering.
Moving soundlessly, Ben made his way behind them to look over their shoulders. He was curious to know what had them so engrossed. When his eyes adjusted to the low light in the room, he realised he was seeing security footage of Modeen and Vivienne in the training room. Only Modeen was barely recognisable. She wore a raven wig styled in a severe bob, and was dressed in a revealing gothic outfit comprising of skin-tight jeans, knee-high stiletto boots, and a gleaming black leather bodice. When she turned her face toward the camera, all five men sucked in a breath. Her thick, dark makeup made her look both menacing … and exotic.
Ben’s eyes widened and he straightened to his full height. At his roar of, ‘What the hell?’ the four voyeurs jumped, startled, and the seated guard hastily reached forward and turned off the monitor.
When Reece made as if to scuttle past him, Ben barred the way with a muscular arm, growling, ‘I don’t have time to deal with you idiots now, but the five of us will be talking about this invasion of privacy and improper use of company resources later.’ He frowned at Reece and then at each of the others in turn. ‘In the meantime, I want you to think about how disrespectful you’ve been to a professional colleague who was simply undertaking assigned training.’
Dropping his arm, he barked, ‘Now get back to work, all of you.’ Turning on his heel, he marched stiff-backed from the room, doing his best to swallow a grin.
When he strode into the special ops command briefing room, he found Jack Pender waiting for him.
Greeting him with a nod, Jack said, ‘Close the door would you, Ben?’ As the doors and glass front wall of the room changed from clear to opaque, Jack switched on a large LCD screen mounted on the wall. ‘Remember this guy?’
Ben peered at the picture of a swarthy man on the screen and frowned. ‘Salvatore Batista, a black marketeer and brothel owner working out of Sydney.’ He glanced at Jack. ‘Latest intel says he’s expanding operations.’
‘Correct. And we’ve just received some more, very troubling info,’ Jack said grimly. ‘It ties him to a recent aircraft hijacking in the US, one that was kept under wraps to avoid panicking the population.’
Ben’s expression darkened as Jack went on.
‘Luckily, the attempt was neutralised before it become another nine-eleven. The geniuses responsible boarded a seven forty-seven out of Vancouver and managed to park themselves next to a group of CIA agents returning to Washington.
